The Boat School - Husson

THE BOAT SCHOOL-HUSSON

NEWS
For Immediate Release February 27, 2008

THE BOAT SCHOOL-HUSSON TO HOLD
BOAT SCHOOL DISCOVERY DAY ON APRIL 17 FOR PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS FROM MAINE & NEW BRUNSWICK

The Boat School-Husson, America’s oldest boat building school, will hold an open house at their Eastport, Maine campus on April 17 for prospective students from Maine and New Brunswick. Maine and New Brunswick students are given the same discounted tuition structure.

The all-day event will provide prospective students from high schools in the cross-border region the opportunity to learn first hand what the school offers in their one and two-year programs, available tuition assistance and the many careers in the marine trades industry.

“The day is designed for 11th and 12th graders from area high schools from Maine and New Brunswick,” says Boat School administrator John Miller. “At our Boat School Discovery Day students will get a chance to tour our waterfront campus, explore our Boat Shop and training facilities, talk with instructors and students, participate in hands-on demonstrations, meet with admissions and financial aid officers, hear about scholarships for Maine residents from Maine’s North Star Alliance, and participate in a conversation with leaders of the marine industry about the great careers they offer – all in a casual and relaxed atmosphere. We will even treat everyone to lunch.”

The program begins at 10:00AM and runs until 3:00PM.

The Boat School Discovery Day is also open to parents and anyone that is interested in attending The Boat School and pursuing a career in the marine trades. Anyone that would like to attend needs to register before April 1 by calling 207-853-2518.

The Boat School - Husson offers one and two year certificate and diploma programs in Wood Construction, Marine Systems, Composite & Fiberglass Construction, Marine Painting and Marine Mechanical Systems.

Husson College is the largest private educator of Maine students and offers certificates, associates, bachelors, masters and doctoral programs at various locations across the state.

Boat building classes are conducted in a well-equipped waterfront campus at Deep Cove, in Eastport, Maine. Through a combination of technical instruction and practical hands-on boat building experience, students acquire an understanding of the principles of boat design, drafting, marine systems, marine painting, mechanical systems, and composites. They also develop the skills for lofting, building wood and fiberglass boats, as well as maintaining and restoration of boats. With tuition at only $8000.00 a year for both Maine and New Brunswick students, The Boat School in Eastport is the regions most comprehensive and affordable boatbuilding program. The tuition includes a thousand dollars worth of tools that are the students to keep after completion of their program.

“This is a hands-on school for professional boatbuilders and mechanics. Graduates have gained a national reputation for excellence,” says David G. Brown, author of Boatbuilding with Baltek Durakore

Upon completion of the boat building program, graduates will be qualified for the following positions: Boatbuilding (wood & composite), Marine joiner, Mold Maker, Lofting technician, Marina Technician, Composite Technician, Hull Surveyor Assistant, Systems Installer, Job Estimator, Boat Repairer, Shipwright, Service manager, Yard manager, Travel lift Operator, Cabinetry Technician, Fiberglass Boat Repairer, Marine Painter and Marine Mechanical Systems Technician.

The Boat Building Industry in Maine and the Maritimes is vibrant and growing. The first ship in America was built in Maine over 400 years ago. Four centuries later, the industry offers more quality jobs then there are people to fill them. These are careers with benefits and long term stability. Today there is a shortage of qualified applicants for jobs in boat repair and construction facilities the full length of the Maine Coast. In addition Maine trained boat builders are highly sought after by boat building operations on the entire East Coast of the United States. Maine’s boat building industry is robust as the State’s third largest industry, employing over 2,500 workers with annual sales over $355 million and a payroll of $95 million.

RE: SCHOLARSHIP, Claire Duclos Education Fund

ARMA International, the Association of Records Managers and Administrators, is a leading professional organization of individuals in the expanding field of records and information management. There are over 10,000 ARMA members in North American and throughout the world. ARMA International is comprised of 145 local chapters, including the Atlantic Chapter, which provides networking and leadership opportunities through monthly meetings and seminars.

The Atlantic Chapter of ARMA International is pleased to inform you of the Claire Duclos Education Fund. The Fund is in memory of Claire Duclos who worked tirelessly to promote our profession and Association. Ms. Duclos succumbed to cancer in 1997 and graciously left a sum of money to the ARMA Atlantic Chapter. We have chosen to use this money to create an education fund to continue to promote records and information management and ARMA, both to which she was very devoted.

Individuals actively pursing an education and/or certification in records and information management residing within the Province of New Brunswick or members of the Atlantic Chapter are eligible for a scholarship. Students enrolled in a full-time program are eligible for a five hundred dollar ($500) scholarship; students enrolled in a part-time program such as correspondence and online courses are eligible for a two hundred fifty dollar ($250) scholarship; and/or individuals pursuing certification (CRM) are eligible for up to a two hundred fifty dollar ($250) scholarship. The number of scholarships awarded per year shall be determined by the Education Fund Sub-Committee.

The successful candidate(s) will be announced in May 2008 and presented with an award at the Chapter’s Annual General Meeting and social held in June. The deadline for this year’s applications is March 31, 2008.

If you have any questions about the scholarship, please contact me by phone at 506.453.6070 or by e-mail at lisette.dugas@gnb.ca.

UCBeyond Scholarship

Second UCBeyond Scholarship Program launched for students living with rheumatoid arthritis
(Posted February 27, 2008)
UCB Pharma Canada recently announced the return of the UCBeyond Crohn's Disease and Rheumatoid Arthritis Scholarship Program, the first and only scholarships of their kind in Canada. “This scholarship, quite simply, has changed my life,” says Laura Bradbury, recipient of a 2007 UCBeyond Crohn’s Disease Scholarship. “Completing my post-secondary schooling has always been a goal for me, and the UCBeyond Scholarship Program has given me the opportunity to achieve it.” Obtaining a good education - an important goal for most Canadians - is hard enough to attain without dealing with a chronic illness. With the objective of making education an achievable goal for students living with Crohn's disease and rheumatoid arthritis, UCB Pharma Canada is committed to offering the UCBeyond Scholarship Program again in 2008. “UCB is dedicated to creating unique programs and tools to aid patients in reaching above and beyond the boundaries of their disease and fulfilling their educational ambitions,” says Rob Hamilton, President of UCB Pharma Canada. “We are proud of the 14 recipients who have already furthered their post-secondary education through these scholarships, and we look forward to even more participation across Canada in 2008. Not only do the scholarships create incredible opportunities, but also great awareness of these diseases.” The UCBeyond Scholarship Program will award seven (7), one-time scholarships of up to $5,000 CDN each to people diagnosed with Crohn's disease and seven (7), one-time scholarships of up to $5,000 CDN each to people diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. The winners must demonstrate academic ambition and use their scholarship toward post-secondary education (i.e. university, college, trade school, etc.) for the 2008/09 school year. An independent selection committee of leading physicians and patient representatives from across the country will again choose the 2008 UCBeyond Scholarship recipients. Applicants will be evaluated based on a one-page essay demonstrating how they go above and beyond their disease, exhibit perseverance and empower others, as well as two letters of personal recommendation. The deadline to apply is June 30, and winners will be announced in September 2008. “The UCB Scholarship is valuable to the arthritis community,” says Steven McNair, President and CEO of The Arthritis Society. “The scholarship has made an impact in the lives of people living with rheumatoid arthritis. It has provided young Canadians with an opportunity to pursue their educational goals and it has empowered them to live their lives to the fullest. When someone is diagnosed with arthritis, what they desire to achieve can become a challenge, and this helps them to overcome obstacles that arthritis imposes on their lives.” Other proud supporters of the UCBeyond Scholarship Program include: The Arthritis Society (TAS), the Canadian Rheumatology Association (CRA), the Canadian Arthritis Patient Alliance (CAPA) and the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology (CAG). Students interested in applying for the 2008 UCBeyond Crohn’s Disease and Rheumatoid Arthritis Scholarship Program can obtain an application package from their gastroenterologist or rheumatologist.
