Program Dates: September 29, 2008 – August 14, 2009 (certified after course is completed)

Program Offering: This is a Blended Delivery including online theory, lab and clinical. You must have access to a computer and the internet.

Expected Employment: In a nursing home or hospital setting

Prerequisites: High School Diploma, or Adult High School Diploma, or GED Certificate of High School Equivalency
Please provide proof at time of application!

Program Completion Requirements:

v 4 weeks of lab at NBCC-SJ
v 2 days of non-violent crisis intervention at NBCC-SJ
v CPR, Level C (student must obtain on own prior to clinical)
v 10 weeks of clinical practicum

Total Tuition: $8,500 - payable in three installments (subject to change) A $200 confirmation fee of (applied to tuition) is payable upon acceptance

Textbooks: $900.00 (approx)

Additional Costs: Uniforms, shoes, lab/clinical travel, stationery, etc. – approximately $575 (depending on travel requirements)

Language Requirements: If you have completed your schooling in a language other than English, you will be required to demonstrate your competence in English. For example, on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), you must have a score of 550 and a minimum of 50 points in each test area. You may also use the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) which includes a comprehension component. Tests for second language proficiency are at the expense of the applicant.

Human Development Department at NBCC Saint John Campus is pleased to once again offer the Personal Support Worker program this coming September. This program prepares the student to provide care to the elderly in a health care facility. The employment rate of our past graduates is over 95% and students can expect a starting salary of anywhere from $13 - $18 per hour.

The career is rewarding and there is opportunity for the PSW's to advance to LPN status through further training offered by this Campus.

Admission requirements are that students have high school completion or the equivalent. We require an official transcript of marks.

Registrations are being accepted now and please note we do not have a registration fee for this program.

Animation and Gaming Careers

Animation and Gaming Careers

Animation and Gaming is the single fastest growing industry. Games alone have brought in more revenues than all of Hollywood combined over the past few years. Many high school students play games, and hopefully more then a few have an interest in learning how to make these games.

NBCC Miramichi has been offering programs in Animation and Gaming for over a decade; our programs and very strong and our graduates are sought after all over. Gaming includes 3D Design, Level Design, and Game Programming. Game programmers are especially in demand with many of our students juggling multiple offers, local and non-local, before they graduate.

Since Gaming is a male-dominated industry, females qualify for the Wage Gap initiative that covers their first year of tuition completely.

Please share the Jalloo press release, below, with your art and technology teachers and your students. Anyone may register for and attend the Jalloo Festival and learn more about the Animation and Game industry.

At 4pm on the afternoon of 12 June, the Showcase is open to the general public, allowing non-attendees a chance to see some of the work being done right here in NB. We would love to help you arrange to bring in your grade 11 and 12 students to attend the showcase and see the industry-level productions as well.

Jalloo Brings International Stars of Gaming and Animation to Miramichi

The oddly named Jalloo Festival of Animation and Games is bringing in guest speakers from all over the world to speak about the Animation and Games industry. In addition to guests from local industry (NB, PEI, NS), experts from Boston (US), Hamburg (Germany), and Reykjavik (Iceland) are coming to talk about Games and Animation at the first annual Jalloo Festival on June 11-12 in Miramichi NB.

Guests include animator Willy Ashworth (Babar, Ewoks, CareBears, Tiny Toon Adventures), 3D artist Chaz Sutherland (The Matrix: Path of Neo, Medal of Honor: Rising Sun, The Golden Compass), animator Ron Doucet (Johnny Test, Oliver’s Adventures, Speed Racer), game designer Ryan Shwayder (EverQuest II, Fighting Legends), and game artist Ben Mathis (Tony Hawk Project 8, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Ghost Recon 2).

“The Miramichi [campus of NBCC] has been producing graduates in Animation and Gaming for over 10 years.” says Heather Fowler, Head of the Applied Arts Department which is home to the Animation and Gaming programs. “Our graduates are working all over now. The Jalloo Festival helps to serve as a focal point for the local Animation and Games industry allowing them to mingle with international companies, network, and learn. Industry related panels, workshops and networking events make up most of the Festival activities.”

The Jalloo Festival will be showcasing clips from Animation companies, games and demos from Game companies, and work from students in both Canada and the US. The festival will close with a showcase of work by graduates of the two-year Animation, 3D, and Electronic Game Design programs as well as graduates from the Advanced Applied Arts Diploma program, an optional one-year “post-grad” program where graduates from the two year programs complete a 1 year internship with the Department of National Defence at CFB Gagetown.

We are also pleased to offer high school students with a passion for robotics the opportunity to learn about the ins and outs of designing, building and battling a competitive "battlebot," from scratch. At the beginning of the program, teams consisting of 4 students and one Faculty advisor will start with a pile of gears, wheels and motors. By the end of the program, with a dash of creativity, strategy, teamwork and knowledge, teams will have a lean, mean battlebot machine! To round out the learning experience, students also attend seminars led by some of the Faculty's most innovative researchers in areas relating to robotics.

The Accounting Profession in New Brunswick

GENERAL INFORMATION HANDOUT

The demand for professional accountants in New Brunswick is growing faster than the professional bodies, which accredit accountants, can satisfy. The organizations representing over 2000 professional accountants in New Brunswick: CMAs (Certified Management Accountants), CGAs (Certified General Accountants) and CAs (Chartered Accountants), have partnered to deliver a program that will inform students in New Brunswick high schools about the accounting profession and to provide a peek into what a career as a professional accountant would be like.

At the center of the program is a DVD collage of real-life professional accountants working in various roles and industries in New Brunswick. In addition, animated characters walk the viewer through the thought process that students might follow as they think about their future and what they may want from their career. We are sure the DVD will encourage students to think about their future in time to select the post-secondary program that most effectively leads to the career of their choice.

The Accounting For My Future DVD is supplemented by the www.accountingformyfuture.com website where students may view the DVD and enter a contest to win one of five iPODS that will be awarded. Students may enter a ballot anytime before April 30, 2008 by providing their name with middle initial and selecting their high school from the drop down menu. The program was originally launched on April 10, 2007 with a press release and a simultaneous presentation at three major high schools in the province. It is planned that through the coming months, every high school in the province will be visited by a representative from one of the three professional accounting organizations to introduce the DVD, the website and the contest and to speak briefly about the highlights of a career in accounting.

The vast shortage of accountants around the world is only beginning to be felt in New Brunswick. By the time today’s high school students complete their post-secondary education, the demand for professional accountants will be such that students will have the pick of where they want to work, who they want to work for and what they want to do. Having a professional accounting designation will open a world of opportunity.

Applications are now being accepted for the Fred Ross Award. The Fred Ross Award is intended to acknowledge the remarkable career of Saint John painter Fred Ross, and to recognize his deep interest in helping artists of the future. This award is for students graduating from secondary schools in New Brunswick who intend to pursue post-secondary studies in visual art or craft.

The $4,000 Fred Ross Award ($2,000 per year for two years) is given to a student graduating from secondary school in New Brunswick who intends to pursue post-secondary studies in visual art or craft. If you know of a deserving graduating high school student who fits the criteria, please encourage them to submit an application.

Completed applications, with all support material, must be postmarked on or before the deadline date which is April 7th, 2008. Late or incomplete applications, or those submitted by fax or email, will not be accepted. The Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation, Inc. reserves the right to refuse applications that are incomplete or that do not follow the guidelines presented. BOAT SCHOOL DISCOVERY DAY ON APRIL 17 FOR PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS FROM MAINE & NEW BRUNSWICK

The Boat School-Husson, America’s oldest boat building school, will hold an open house at their Eastport, Maine campus on April 17 for prospective students from Maine and New Brunswick. Maine and New Brunswick students are given the same discounted tuition structure.

The all-day event will provide prospective students from high schools in the cross-border region the opportunity to learn first hand what the school offers in their one and two-year programs, available tuition assistance and the many careers in the marine trades industry.

“The day is designed for 11th and 12th graders from area high schools from Maine and New Brunswick,” says Boat School administrator John Miller. “At our Boat School Discovery Day students will get a chance to tour our waterfront campus, explore our Boat Shop and training facilities, talk with instructors and students, participate in hands-on demonstrations, meet with admissions and financial aid officers, hear about scholarships for Maine residents from Maine’s North Star Alliance, and participate in a conversation with leaders of the marine industry about the great careers they offer – all in a casual and relaxed atmosphere. The program begins at 10:00AM and runs until 3:00PM.

The Fund is in memory of Claire Duclos who worked tirelessly to promote our profession and Association. Ms. Duclos succumbed to cancer in 1997 and graciously left a sum of money to the ARMA Atlantic Chapter. We have chosen to use this money to create an education fund to continue to promote records and information management and ARMA, both to which she was very devoted.

Individuals actively pursing an education and/or certification in records and information management residing within the Province of New Brunswick or members of the Atlantic Chapter are eligible for a scholarship. Students enrolled in a full-time program are eligible for a five hundred dollar ($500) scholarship; students enrolled in a part-time program such as correspondence and online courses are eligible for a two hundred fifty dollar ($250) scholarship; and/or individuals pursuing certification (CRM) are eligible for up to a two hundred fifty dollar ($250) scholarship. The number of scholarships awarded per year shall be determined by the Education Fund Sub-Committee.

The successful candidate(s) will be announced in May 2008 and presented with an award at the Chapter’s Annual General Meeting and social held in June. The deadline for this year’s applications is March 31, 2008.

UCB Pharma Canada recently announced the return of the UCBeyond Crohn's Disease and Rheumatoid Arthritis Scholarship Program, the first and only scholarships of their kind in Canada. “This scholarship, quite simply, has changed my life,” says Laura Bradbury, recipient of a 2007 UCBeyond Crohn’s Disease Scholarship. “Completing my post-secondary schooling has always been a goal for me, and the UCBeyond Scholarship Program has given me the opportunity to achieve it.” Obtaining a good education - an important goal for most Canadians - is hard enough to attain without dealing with a chronic illness. With the objective of making education an achievable goal for students living with Crohn's disease and rheumatoid arthritis, UCB Pharma Canada is committed to offering the UCBeyond Scholarship Program again in 2008. “UCB is dedicated to creating unique programs and tools to aid patients in reaching above and beyond the boundaries of their disease and fulfilling their educational ambitions,” says Rob Hamilton, President of UCB Pharma Canada. “We are proud of the 14 recipients who have already furthered their post-secondary education through these scholarships, and we look forward to even more participation across Canada in 2008. FW: Oulton College Dental Education Center Opens

This past summer we finished the construction of our new Dental Education Center.

The Dental Assistant and Dental Hygiene Programs used to be offered in our main building where there were two classrooms and a clinic area with five dental chairs and one x-ray room.

Now, the Dental Assistant and Hygiene Programs are offered in a separate building which has seventeen dental chairs and four x-ray rooms, along with classrooms, student area, offices for instructors, and a reception area.

According to Patterson Dental, the company that builds these clinics, it is one of the most state-of-the-art dental clinics in Atlantic Canada right now having been built this summer using the latest technologies for chairs and equipment.

The class sizes have remained the same at about thirty students for Dental Assistant and twenty four for Dental Hygiene, but offering the students three times the facilities which allows for more hands-on practical learning.

The program is very much build on hands-on learning rather than mostly theory. The Dental Education Center runs as a real dental clinic with a constant in and out of patients. In the very first week, student are experiencing clinical work. They spend about half the day in class and half the day in the clinic reinforcing what they learned in class.

The Dental Assistant Program is a fully nationally accredited program. It has passed the accreditation process each of the last four years since we began the course. The board has now given accreditation to the program for the next four years without having to go through the accreditation process each year. Every year since we have begun the program every student in the program has passed the Canadian Dental Assistant Board Exam and obtained their liscence as a Dental Assistant and their job placement rate has been over 90% since the course began.

As you may or may not know, there are some Dental Assisting Academys that have been in existance for over ten years have not received accreditation. Therefore their students will need to attend additional classes at an accredited school in order to qualify to write their board exams and obtain their license as a Dental Assistant. Their are some programs that have been around for many years and still haven't had a year where the entire class has passed the Canadian Board Exam.

As far as Dental Hygiene is concerned. It is a two step process towards accreditation and we have passed step one and now have to have some graduates to pass step two. Our program started last year so our first graduating class will be this spring. We are hoping to complete the final step later this year. Like Ontario and some other provinces, it will be possible to work as a Dental Hygienist in New Brunswick from our program even though it is not Nationally Accredited. Dentists in the province have helped us build the program and have mentioned that accredited or not they will still hire our graduates. Even though this is the case our objective is to be Nationally Accredited. If someone moves to a province that requires accreditation and doesn't have it, they would need to write a provincial exam or Canadian Board Exam to qualify to work in that province.

These are by far two of our more popular programs and there are only a few seats remaining for this fall. If you have students interested in these programs, they should be applying in the coming weeks to avoid the waiting list. We will be offering our own university level (taught by a prof a Universite de Moncton) first year Biology and Chemistry courses in English this summer during consecutives weekends in May and June if someone does not have all the pre-requisites now.

They can write an aptitude test to see if they would qualify to take the summer courses that lead to acceptance into Dental Hygiene.

Oulton College opens Veterinary Hospital

Last summer, Oulton College opened a Veterinary Hospital, fully approved and liscenced by the Province of New Brunswick, named the Oulton College Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

The students in the Veterinary Technician Program now have the opportunity of acquiring their skills while working in a Veterinary Hospital.

The students spend half the day in class and other half is spent in the hospital reinforcing what they covered in theory.

There is a major need for Veterinary Technicians at the moment all across Canada.

We may usually think of Vet Techs working in Veterinarian's Offices, Animal Hospitals, or zoos; however commercial farms, research companies, and universities all use animals for tests and experimentation and require Vet Techs to maintain these animals. So these are the employers driving the need for Veterinary Technicians.

As long as a student has grade 11 or 12 Biology with at least a 60%, they may qualify for admission into the program.

Centre for Marine Biodiversity - Essay Contest

The Centre for Marine Biodiversity has announced its annual Atlantic-wide essay contest. The competition is open to all grade 12 students and the winner will receive first year’s tuition at a contributing Atlantic Canadian University or College (NSAC, UNBF, UNBSJ, St.FX, MUN, UdM, USA). Two subsidiary prizes of partial tuition fees will also be available.
